HOW TO ACTIVATE JAVA APPLETS

Security Dialog

You must have been greeted with a scary Java security warning (above) like this, and the Alphametic Puzzle Solver applet was not enabled.

Starting with the release of Java 7 Update 51, Oracle skyrocketed the Java security levels by eliminating the Middle level, and now the applications only work on High and Very High levels, and only if signed with a certificate from a "trusted certificate authority". Thus, overnight, millions of applications worldwide were thrown sideways, without mercy, and won't run automatically! (Shame on you, Oracle!). To run applications automatically, one has to pay a Certification annual rate in the range of hundreds of dollars!

But out of respect for our users, and while we do the reprogramming of this application in another language than Java, here are some tips on how to activate it in the Java Exception Site List. This will give you a hard time, but we think it is justified by the exceptional quality of our "Alphametic Puzzle Solver". So here we go:

Find the Java Control Panel

» Windows
»
 Mac OS X

Manage the Exception Site List

The exception site list is managed in the Security tab of the Java Control Panel. The current list is shown in the tab.

Add our URL to the Exception Site List

  • Click on the Edit Site List button.
  • Click the Add in the Exception Site List window.
  • Click in the empty field under Location field to type our URL:  http://cryptarithms.awardspace.us
  • Click OK to save the URL that you entered. If you click Cancel, the URLs are not saved.
  • Click Continue on the Security Warning dialog.
Done!  We finish by clicking OK on the Java Control Panel.

Now shut all the browser windows, restart it, and load the Alphametic Puzzle Solver.
The application should load automatically. If not, and you use a pop-up blocker, you may need to configure it to allow site pop-ups. Maybe, depending on your browser configuration, you need to configure the pop-ups' unlock manually in the browser security settings.

If these tips do not work, visit the Oracle Java Help page.

Good luck!
